Joan Campbell Breeden
'Mizpatches'
1932-2010
COPD-ALERT lost one of the founding members, whose contribution to
the development of this group cannot be exaggerated. Joan was a
dynamic lady with a big heart, great sense of humor, and tenacity that
inspired many of us in the COPD community. She organized rallies in
Washington to get COPD recognized by our nation's leaders, wrote
Congressmen and Senators, but she also devoted a significant amount of
her daily life to helping persons afflicted with this terrible disease. Joan
understood the importance of sharing experiences and knowledge about
COPD. Her contributions were acknowledged by Dr. Tom Petty in his
book "Adventures of an Oxyphile." We have benefited greatly from her
posts about current research on COPD and basic concepts about the
disease, treatment, and self-management.
We were very lucky to have her in our group and we will miss her very
much.
Joan was also a good personal friend. We have often exchanged e-mails
and we had great time with my wife when visiting her at home. Joan was
very warm, compassionate, and loyal; the kind of a friend we all like to
have.

A Memorial Service and Interment for Joan will be held at Quantico
National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road (Route 619), Triangle, VA
22172. The service will start at 11:00 on Friday, June 18, 2010. Anyone
planning to attend should be at the main entrance no later than 10:00 am.
A live broadcast of the service will be made available on Facebook for
family and friends who cannot attend.

                                         A ROLE MODEL

Our COPD Community has been blessed with some very special
individuals - patients who set a high standard for help and support
for those of us afflicted with this disease. They leave behind a
lasting impression through that dedication to the COPD community.

Joan Breeden (Mizpatches), who passed on today, was a role model for
all of us.  A major driving force in helping all COPD patients, she
will be remembered for her part in helping establish COPD-ALERT as
well as being an effective advocate for COPD patients - from
organizing patient rallies on Washington, D.C. to contacting
legislators on bills vital to all.

Rest well Joan, secure in the knowledge that you have established a
high standard of support and advocacy for all.  You have the
communities love and deep respect.
