Medical research on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) must be given the
highest priority!
I urge you to support and sponsor increased funding for COPD research and all other
medical project which would facilitate development of COPD-specific medications
and treatment.
COPD is the fourth major cause of death and the second major cause of disability in the United States. COPD mortality figures continue to grow and they surpass the number of AIDS victims. By 2020 COPD is projected to reach the third place. More than 12 million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD and as many do not yet know that they have it. This is a medical emergency that must be taken very seriously. This is no longer a smokers' problem, it is America's problem. Our country's prosperity and future are at stake.
I hope that the urgency of this matter will prompt the Congress to mandate the NIH that it allocates more funds for COPD research. For years these allocations have been scandalously low in comparison with other diseases, characterized by many times smaller death rates. Please review this chart.
